Cold Spring Harbor Junior High Students Use Creativity to Support California Wildfire Victims

In a heartwarming display of creativity and compassion, eighth-grade students at Cold Spring Harbor Junior High School have turned their artistic talents into a force for good. As part of their “Year of Service” initiative for the 2024-2025 school year, students designed and created custom pizza box covers and shopping bags to raise funds for victims of the recent California wildfires.

The project, a collaboration between art and technology classes, saw students in Ann McLam’s art class designing vibrant pizza box covers, while those in Morgan Milleisen’s technology class crafted reusable shopping bags. The finished products were unveiled at a special event held at DiRaimo’s Pizzeria in Huntington on January 22, where the community gathered to admire the students’ work and support the cause.

The timing of the fundraiser aligned with the urgent needs of California wildfire victims, and all proceeds from the sale of the pizza boxes and shopping bags were donated to support relief efforts. The initiative not only provided financial assistance but also raised awareness about the devastating impact of the wildfires.

The “Year of Service” is a part of the school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum, encouraging students to identify and address needs within their community and beyond. Seventh-grade students are currently visiting elementary classrooms to determine how they can contribute through fundraising or donations, while eighth graders are exploring ways to support causes both locally and globally.
